Kořensko Waterworks

The same as the Hněvkovice Waterworks, together they are a system of two waterworks, the Kořensko Waterworks was built during the years 1986 to 1991. Both waterworks are thus the newest steps on the so-called Vltava cascade.

The purpose of the Kořensko Waterworks, built approximately 2 km below the confluence of the Vltava and Lužnice Rivers, first of all, is to prevent the fluctuation of the water level of the Vltava in the town of Týn nad Vltavou, then to homogenise the effluent from the Temelín nuclear power station, and last but not least, to generate electricity in a small hydroelectric power station, equipped with two elbow-tube Kaplan turbines with an output of 2 x 1.9 MW (with a water gradient of 2 to 6.2 metres and a water flow rate of 35 m³ per second).

The Kořensko Waterworks is not really a dam in the truest meaning of the word, but a weir with four spans, each 20 metres wide and 4.8 metres high. Because the Kořensko Waterworks is located in the backwater of the Orlík Waterworks, it functions as a so-called submerged step, because it is constantly submerged under the water of the Orlík Dam reservoir. It only retains water when the water level in the Orlík reservoir drops below 353.05 metres above sea level. Thus, the Kořensko Waterworks prevents, as was already mentioned, marked fluctuation of the level of the Vltava in the town of Týn nad Vltavou.

The Kořensko Waterworks also includes a lock, enabling boat transport of vessels with displacements up to 300 tonnes. The dimensions of the lock are, same as the Hněvkovice Waterworks, 45 x 6 metres.
